Living Our Masonic Responsibilities – an excerpt from H. Dwight McAlister, P.G.M GL of South Carolina

Our Masonic responsibilities can really be summed up in one word, "PRACTICE." We have the responsibility of living our Masonry before the world. Every Master Mason is charged with the practice of Masonic ideals and principles as taught in

Masonry's degrees. Every Master Mason must realize the gravity of his responsibility as a Mason, and practice, in his everyday life, the principles taught at the Altar of our Lodges. In

Masonry we say that it is unMasonic to solicit members, and it is if you are speaking of asking someone to join the Fraternity. I submit, however, that we do solicit by the lives we live before

the world. I submit also that to influence others to seek admission to our Fraternity by the lives we live is a far better

way to get new members than by simply asking men to join.

I repeat-every Master Mason should realize and be conscious of his responsibility to live Masonry in his daily life. In short, we should practice what we preach.

''Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world. ''

- JOEL BARKER

“Freemasonry is a moral order, instituted by virtuous men, with the praiseworthy design of recalling to our remembrance the most sublime truths, in the midst of the most innocent and social pleasures, founded on liberality, brotherly love and charity.” -- Arnold

The Mentor
(Author unknown)

An old man, traveling on a lone highway,
Came, at the evening, cold and gray,
To a chasm, vast, and deep, and wide
Through which was flowing a sullen tide.

The old man crossed in the twilight dim'
The sullen stream had no fears for him.
But he turned, when safe on the other side,
And built a bridge to span the tide

"Old man," said a fellow pilgrim, near,
"You are wasting strength with building here;
Your journey will end with the evening day,
You never again must pass this way.
You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide
Why build you this bridge at the eventide?"

The builder lifted his gray old head.
"Good friend, in the path I have come," he said
"There follows after me today
A youth, whose feet must pass this way.

This chasm, that has been naught to me,
To that fair haired youth may a pitfall be.
He, too must cross into the twilight dim.
Good friend, I am building this bridge for him."

Greetings from the EAST

Brethren,

Please excuse the delay, as I am sure that by the time that you have received this letter, you will have already enjoyed our annual picnic and, hopefully, helped to support the efforts of Lincoln Park Ionic for some relief for our friend suffering the devastations of Cancer.  With Summer coming to a close and school starting in a matter of weeks, I am sure that everyone will be busy. It’s also time to start planning our Fall activities and Lodge work as there is still much to do in and around the Lodge. We will have an updated list of “needs” posted soon.

It looks as though we will have work for the rest of the year – we are a growing Lodge – so be prepared to get some practice in. We will be scheduling practice sessions during the week, and I am sure that we will be discussing this at our next regular communication which will be on Tuesday September 2, 2008. This is due to the Holiday being on Monday. Hope to see many of you there.

Brothers, with all of the activities, both good and bad, which have happened over the past few months, I am requesting that all of us take a few moments to re-read and remember our obligations – EA, FC, and MM. Each of us recited these obligations while kneeling at the altar, before our brethren and our God, and in token of our sincerity, each of us kissed the book before us, which was the Holy Bible. I am asking each of you to take a moment to reflect on these obligations and their importance to not only the fraternity, but also to ourselves.

In  closing, I would like to remind all of you that our Lodge is only as strong, as good, as dedicated, as loyal and respectful, as its’ members, and our Lodge’s potential is INCREDIBLE!!!!

When we help each other things get done.
                                                                            George K. Graham Jr. W.M.

Writings from the WEST

Brothers,

Summer is flying by, and I don’t wish it to end, but, I am looking forward to resuming work back at the Lodge.

I first became a Mason to be a part of something important. Today, it means so much more to me. I have learned a lot over the past few years, and realize that there is still much more to learn. One thing that I learned, is that we are not all going to see “eye to eye” on certain things. That is okay, but we do need to stick together. Everyone has their own opinion and views on different subjects, and each one of them is important. Therefore, each one should be heard and respected as such. I have grown to respect this Lodge, and ALL of its members, from the newest EA who sits in the North East corner, to the most experienced Past Masters as well as all the Brethren on the sidelines.

If this Lodge is to remain as successful as it now is, we must ALL exercise Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth.

Until next month

Fraternally

Russell Ouellette, S.W.

The prosperity of Masonry as a means of strengthening our religion, and propagating truth and brotherly love, is one of the dearest wishes of my heart, which, I trust, will be gratified by the help of the Grand Architect of the universe.” -- Christian, King of Denmark

Secretary Scribbles

Brothers, Family, and Friends,

Greetings to all! It has been a few months since our last communication, and a lot has happened in that time. We, as a Fraternal Organization, have suffered some losses of great Masons, gone through some changes in Grand Lodge leadership, and still continued to grow through it all. Here at the Lodge level, we have seen new Brothers come in, older Brothers (Family and Friends also) pass onward and upward, Laughed and cried with each other, helped and supported one another through some “rough” times, celebrated births and marriages, and continued to spread Brotherly Love throughout the community. I am proud to be part of this Fraternal Family!!

Brothers, as of this writing, there are still 40 of you that have not yet paid their dues for 2008. Our delinquent Dues Committee has placed calls to your homes, I have sent 5 notices, and we have also tried to visit you. Your Dues MUST be paid in September, or we will have to suspend your membership. To do so would be a tragic day in Masonry. Economic times being what they are, we know that certain situations arise. Please contact us so that we can discuss and help, if needed.

As most of you are aware, we have been holding “educational” classes here in the hall on Thursday evenings. As I have opted to spend some more time with my daughter, by means of managing her soccer team, I will be unable to conduct more of  these sessions until the late Fall or early Winter. If there are any Brothers interested in conducting these sessions, please contact me so that we can continue the work that we have started without too long of a lapse. In the mean time, I would like to share one more bit of information that I am sure will start a bit of discussion as well as, like I say in “class”, turn on some lights.

Trying to become a good or better person sounds like a commendable and high minded thing to do. This is what some of us think that Masonry is. You do not become good or better by trying to do this, you succeed by finding the goodness that is already within your heart and allowing that to emerge. This is not something that you “look” for, it is something that you find within yourself when you let go of your ego, living by the basic principles and teachings that are fundamental in Masonry. As I have stated in the past, the “secrets” of Freemasonry lie within each of us, and when we “feel” them, we know them.

Until next month

John R Miller

“The grand object of Masonry is to promote the happiness of the human race.” -- Washington

“Masonry is an art, useful and extensive, which comprehends within its circle every branch of useful knowledge and learning, and stamps an indelible mark of preeminence on its genuine professors, which neither chance, power, nor fortune can bestow.” -- Preston

The Working Tools of an E-Mason

I now present you with the working tools of an E-mason....
They are the mouse.
The keyboard.
And the modem.

The mouse is to move within the desktop.
The keyboard to input the data.
And the modem to publish in cyber space.

But as we are not online, as computer nerds.

But rather as Free and Accepted E-Masons.

We use these tools to obtain more Masonic light and to show us the true meaning and value of E-Masons.

And thus we apply them.....

The mouse teaches us to keep within the bounds of the screen. A square wherein which we all meet on the level.

The keyboard is to show us that communicating will lead us to a better understanding of each other and the rest of mankind.

The modem to teach us that even when we are alone, or in the most remote part of the globe, we may meet and gain moral sustenance and support from each other and thus gain more light, from our Ancient and Honorable Fraternity.

So Mote it Be...

.
