What is the purpose of Masonry?

One of its most basic purposes is to make good men even better. We try to place emphasis on the individual man by strengthening his character, improving his moral and spiritual outlook, and broadening his mental horizons. We try to impress upon the minds of our members the principles of personal responsibility and morality, encouraging each member to practice in his daily life the lessons taught through symbolic ceremonies in the lodge. One of the universal doctrines of Freemasonry is the belief in the "Brotherhood of Man and the Fatherhood of God". The importance of this belief is established by each Mason as he practices the three principle tenets of Masonry: Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth.

Masonry is also the custodian of a tradition of initiation. It is the duty of every Freemason to preserve and perpetuate this tradition for future ages. This is a heavy responsibility and should give pause to any who would seek to make changes in the body of the Craft, except those with the highest motives and deepest understanding of the principles involved.

Greetings from the EAST

Brothers another month has come and gone and we are that much closer to Spring and all the work that goes with it. Speaking of work, we have plenty coming our way. By the time this trestle board in your hands, hopefully we will have finished all Fellowcraft ritual and already be started on the Master Mason work which will continue throughout April with a Master Mason dinner on the last Monday of the month.
Please note that included in this trestle board, you will find calendar pages containing times of our meetings, the Shrine Club meetings, as well as Cub Scout meeting times, and any special events. We are trying something new, since there is so much happening, and would appreciate any feedback. Let us know how we are doing.

Our Cub Scout Pack is collecting pop tabs to donate to the American Legion. They will be have a Den Contest over the next month. If you can help these boys to help other children, please drop off your tabs at the Lodge, and WB John will see that they are distributed to the Pack.

I would like to thank all the brothers that have been filling in for absent brothers and officers. Br. Tim Dragone, Br. Josh Roberts, Br. Dennis Barger, Br. Jason Graham, Br. Paul Loudon, Br. Jim Collier, and Br. Bill Loeber. Your stepping up and taking part is both pleasing to me and inspiring to the brethren of this Lodge. Brother  Loeber  congratulations on giving your Master Mason obligation!! Good Job, Well Done! Talking about well done, our work with the candidates and new Brothers is showing, that was the best proficiency I, personally, have seen to date. Please keep up the good work. Last but not least Brother Bud Linne, thank you for the donation of the paint, and prodding, it took to get me to paint the rear entrance hall to the lodge.
When we help each other things get done.
WB George K. Graham Jr. W.M.

Writings from the WEST

Brothers, Family and Friends,

Another busy month here at Golden Ark, and by the looks of things, there are more to come. Lot’s of things happening including Degree work, parties, and Senior Warden dinners. On March 25th, River Rouge, Lincoln Park Ionic, Wolverine, Findlater, and Sojourners Lodge will be holding their SW dinner. On April 26th, tentatively, Phoenix Lodge will have their SW dinner. Our Senior Warden Dinner will be held on May 12th, here at Golden Ark. Joining us will be Allen Park Key, Westgate-Cyrus, and Sunlight Lodges. At this time, it looks as though we will have an EA Candidate that evening, and Lodge will open at 5:30 PM. This will be a SW night, so all of the work will be performed by the SW’s from all the visiting Lodges. Please be sure to attend and show your support for not only myself, but all of the other Brothers from the area. The menu is currently “under construction” and I will update everyone as soon as it is completed.

Br. Russell Ouellette jr. – Senior Warden

salutations from the SOUTH

Greetings Brothers. My hectic schedule has kept me from a few of our meetings, and I would like to thank everyone for their help, support, and understanding. I have been working with WB Mike Barham, who is an Honorary Member of our Lodge, for our refreshments. He has provided us with EXCELLENT food and friendship, and truly reminds us of what it means to be a Mason. Thank You WB Mike!

Our Master Mason Dinner is scheduled for April 28th. The menu is still in the works, and I will update everyone as soon as it is complete.

Brothers, Family, and Friends,

Greetings to all! Spring is right around the corner and before you know it, Summer will be here. With the Summer also comes the dreaded Delinquent Dues Committee responsibility. As of this writing, there are still 90 brothers that have yet to pay their dues. Please get these sent in ASAP. If there are special circumstances, contact us for more information about what to do.

There are many goings on here lately –LOTS of work on Mondays, Cub Scouts on Tuesdays, Mentoring and Practicing on Thursdays, Hall Rentals most weekends – Golden Ark is very Active, be sure to join in and/or take part. Since I have been off of work, I am able to spend more time here at the Lodge, and, I am looking to start a “retiree” day which would allow some of our members another opportunity for fellowship, friendship, and maybe even a meal or two. Please let me know if you are interested. If there is enough interest, we can schedule a day, or two, a month, and maybe even start a “club”

Once again, I would like to request that if you have any Masonic reading material that you may be willing to donate, please forward it on, as we are still building our lending library. This library is intended to help us educate our new brothers, as well as expand the Masonic knowledge of all of us. Thank you to those that have already donated books and DVD’s. I will soon have a list of what is available, and I will pass it on to everyone.

While I am on the subject of donating, below is a partial list of items that, if donated, could help us to reduce expenses. If you are able to help, Thank You!

Envelopes – for 8.5 x 11 documents that cannot be folded

THE TITLE "FREE AND ACCEPTED"

How did the term "Free and Accepted" originate? Ancient craftsmen were very skilled, and their craft was considered to be indispensable to the welfare of both "Church" and "State". For this reason, they were not placed under the same restrictions as were other workers - they were "free" to do their work, travel and live their lives in a manner befitting their importance. In England during the Middle Ages this freedom was rare. Most workers were under bond to the owners of the land on which they worked. Our legendary history carries this freedom for the Operative Mason back to the year 946, in York, England.

The word "Accepted" also goes back to the time of the operative mason. During the latter years of the Middle Ages, there were few educated men outside the monasteries of the world. Naturally, men wanted to become Freemasons to obtain the advantages the craft had to offer. These men did not necessarily want to build buildings; they wanted to belong to the organization. These were "Accepted" Masons, rather than operative masons. This practice probably originated when some of the people for whom the craftsmen were working asked to be admitted. This was an important transition for the Craft, because the secrets of the building trades were becoming more widely known, architecture was changing and membership was declining. By becoming "Speculative," the Craft grew rapidly. As time went on, there became many more "Accepted" members than there were operative members, and eventually we became a Speculative rather than an operative organization.
